Launching of Oxford-Croucher Scholarships for Doctoral Studies

In March 2008, The Croucher Foundation and the University of Oxford jointly established “The University of Oxford Croucher Scholarships” for postgraduate students in Hong Kong to study natural sciences, technology or medicine at the doctoral level at the University of Oxford .

After a stringent selection process conducted by a panel of scientists, Miss Lai-sheung Choi and Mr. Yung-wa Sin, won the first-ever the University of Oxford Croucher Scholarships (UOCS) to pursue doctoral studies in October 2008. These are fully funded scholarships, covering full financial support for their studies at Oxford .

Miss Choi Lai-sheung, was a final-year Master of Philosophy (MPhil) student at the Department of Chemistry, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK).  She will study the use of mutant transmembrane toxin (a-hemolysin) in aiding DNA sequencing and the detection of other molecules at single-molecule level. Lai-sheung is very grateful for the scholarship, which will give her an invaluable opportunity to study under world-renowned chemical biologist Prof. Hagan Bayley.

Mr. Sin Yung-wa obtained his MPhil in biology at CUHK and he is a lover of nature who has been addicted to reading biology books since childhood. Yung-wa will be joining the Wildlife Conservation Research Unit of the Department of Zoology at Oxford to study the management of endangered species and the ecosystem.

These DPhil scholarships are again open for application by September 2008 for awards tenable from the academic year 2009-10.  A maximum of four are available.  Students who are interested should surf the Foundation’s website by mid-September.

The University of Oxford Croucher Scholarships 2008-09

Through a partnership agreement with Oxford University, the Foundation will specially favour Hong Kong students with a number of full scholarships for pursuing DPhil studies in topics in natural science, technology or medicine.

A student interested in these "Oxford University Croucher Scholarships" need NOT complete the Foundation's application form, but should instead indicate clearly on his/her Oxford application form for admission that he/she wishes to apply concurrently for financial support by ticking the box "Clarendon Fund" under Section M of the Oxford admissions application form.  Please also indicate in Section N that a research proposal will be submitted with the form.  They will then be considered by the University and the Croucher Foundation, and if shortlisted, may be required to attend a scientific assessment interview conducted by the Foundation in March/April 2008.  Please refer to the Oxford website for details.

Joint Universities Summer Teaching Laboratory (JUSTL) Programme at Woods Hole

The Foundation has made a grant of HK$1,106,118 to start the 2007 Hong Kong JUSTL programme which is an eight week intensive research and educational experience for Hong Kong postgraduate students at the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, USA.

Programme activities will be centered round a Croucher Foundation-funded summer laboratory located within the summer scientist community at the MBL.  JUSTL programme participants will conduct individual research projects, attend lectures and seminars, as well as undergo training in specialist research techniques.  These activities will be under the guidance of the JUSTL programme Director as well as leading volunteer MBL summer scientist mentors, drawn from Universities and Institutions from around the world.  Details of the programme can be found here.

The person in charge is Professor Andrew Miller of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, who will organise and coordinate the programme in conjunction with leading scientists.  The programme is open to all students in Hong Kong currently doing postgraduate work in a relevant discipline.  The financial support covers laboratory fees, airfare and living expenses for the participants.
